"Have a good trip, Tomkins?"
A bookkeeper in a German barrel factory
A few grave articles in learned reviews
A platoon of Chinese soldiers sheltered from the rain
And of course the pits at the edge of the forest
Bill is gone. Not a serious loss.
From Silesia
George here, pancake, over.
He is lucky that poetry pays so well
He knew nothing about books or barrels
He was twenty-eight, good-looking but too thin
His face seemed less tired
I am as well off as I could reasonably expect
I have been mostly among poets and artists
I have met some ladies and danced
I heard a bugle
I imagine his wife darning socks
It has been an interesting life

Making private jokes and laughing lightly
Many women smoke in public
Music Halls, Cinema, Theatre
Potatoes and Salt
Servants in our own homes
Shot for a piece of bread
The conceit of artists knows no bounds!
The English style of dancing is somewhat stiff
The Germans conserve nothing
The larger hotels have dinner dances now
The man had a good, honest face
There are secret schools
There is much hatred here
They are charmingly sophisticated and have perfected "disillusionment"
We climbed up a muddy bank
We got to the airfield hoping to get out to Hong Kong
White China shaving mugs filled with hot sweet tea
